Micro-Fragmented Adipose Injection
Have none of your treatment options for knee osteoarthritis been effective? A micro-fragmented adipose injection appointment with us might be just what you need to improve your well-being. Here’s what you should know about micro-fragmented adipose injections for regenerative medicine.
What is Micro-Fragmented Adipose Injection?
Micro-Fragmented adipose injections are a form of regenerative medicine that uses adipose tissue cells to help your body by kickstarting its own healing mechanisms. The practice uses adipose tissue or brown fat cells that are collected via the process of lipoaspiration. They are then processed in a laboratory and converted into adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells, which can then be injected back into the body as a form of treatment.
What Are the Benefits of Micro-Fragmented Adipose Injection?
Studies show that micro-fragmented adipose injections have multiple benefits. They are especially helping in reducing pain, improving mobility, and increasing cartilage thickness in patients with knee osteoarthritis, as well as in patients with shoulder pain. A micro-fragmented adipose injection can:
- Improve quality of life by reducing chronic pain
- Improve mobility
- Heal wounds
Micro-Fragmented adipose injections are typically quick procedures that are only mildly invasive. Physiotherapy sessions are often recommended to help regain mobility, and high-impact workouts or other strenuous activities are to be avoided for up to two weeks after the procedure.
What to Expect During a Micro-Fragmented Adipose Injection Appointment
If you’ve never been to a micro-fragmented adipose injection appointment, you might be wondering what to expect. A trained orthopedic surgeon at Cary Disc Center will begin by asking you a series of preoperative questions to determine your current health status. This may also include a physical examination, X-rays, and MRIs of your joint or area of concern.
From there, your adipose tissue will be harvested so it can be converted into adipose-derived stem cells. You will be placed under sedation, and a small incision will be made to remove adipose tissue either from your lower abdomen or buttocks. This will then be sent to the laboratory to be processed into adipose-derived stem cells, which are then injected directly into your area of concern. This is all typically done in one session, preventing the need for the patient to return for repeat visits.
